Hatsuko Tomita, 101, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013 in Yuba City, CA at The Fountains Skilled Nursing Home.

Hatsuko was born on First Street in Marysville, CA on December 23, 1911. She was raised in Japan from age 5 to 17 years old; returning to Marysville she worked for some of the elite families of the area.

In 1933, she married James Risuke Tomita; she cooked for the Japanese laborers at the Golden Gate Hop Ranch and the Whitney Warren Ranch in Wheatland. She was incarcerated at Amache Granada, Colorado during W.W.II. Upon returning to Wheatland she became housekeeper-cook for Whitney Warren preparing gourmet meals for him and his guests. She was an avid seamstress and needle crafter; she enjoyed helping at the Buddhist Church.

Survivors include her son, Michael (A.J.) Tomita of Yuba City; daughters: Miyoko Nakahara of Yuba City and Etsuko (William) Osbekoff of Sitka, Alaska; grandchildren: Hiromi (Melissa) Tomita of Yuba City, Whitney (Curtis) Higgins of Yuba City, William Osbekoff, Jr. of Sitka, Alaska and Dennis (Kristy) Osbekoff of Los Angeles; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, father Otojiro Maruyama, mother Kimiyo Sasaki, and sisters Lillian Tekawa and Charlotte Maruyama.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Marysville Buddhist Church, 125 B St., Marysville.
