J Paul was born on June 8, 1960 to J Paul Sr. and Avis DeWoody. He was the beloved baby brother of three sisters as well as distant half siblings. As an infant, he and his family moved from his birthplace of Anchorage, Alaska to the Chico area. Paul attended school in Orland and graduated from Orland High School, class of 1979. After graduation, he attended college in Tucson, Arizona and later attended the Police Academy at Butte College in 1983.

Paul enjoyed a notable career beginning in 1984 when he began his law enforcement career with the Yuba County Sheriff's department, first working in the jail, then patrol, boat patrol and the Narcotics Task Force. Paul also held a position on the Yuba County SWAT Team and was promoted to Sergeant. He then transferred and finished his career in the District Attorney's office, where he served as an Investigator for 16 years. Of equal importance to Paul was his role as an instructor at Yuba College, where he taught courses in Criminal Justice and instructed at the Police Academy for 17 years.

Paul enjoyed many, many things, including a good life. He loved his friends, his family, a bonfire with good company, camping, fishing and his dog Beau-dacious.

Paul passed away surrounded by some of his favorite people on August 16, 2014 in Marysville, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marlene and Joyce. Paul leaves behind his beloved family; wife Cindy DeWoody; former wife Alicia DeWoody; his children, Victoria and Sean (Kelly) DeWoody; step-children, Stefanie (Nick) Schantz, Rick Eaves, Rocky (Amy) Pina, and Kimberly (Morgan) Stromberg; seven grandchildren; and sisters Renee (Jim) Ludecke and Denise (Joe) Wexelblatt; as well as older brother, Don DeWoody. Paul is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and honorary brothers.

As Paul would say, "Party on Garth." An open farewell memorial will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 4, 2014, at Lipp & Sullivan 629 D Street in Marysville, CA. A final celebration-of-life BBQ in his honor will be hosted by family at Whittaker Hall in Yuba City, CA, immediately following the services.

The family asks that you record your memories of Paul and bring them to the service or send them to Lipp & Sullivan.
