James Harry Lawrie Obituary
James Harry Lawrie
James Harry Lawrie passed away May 19, 2016 in Yuba City, CA. He was 87 years old. Harry was born November 13, 1928 in Walkerville, Ontario Canada to Eunice and Patterson Lawrie. The family lived in Canada until 1932 when they moved to Detroit, Michigan. Harry would become a naturalized US citizen in 1939.

Harry went to college at Albion College in Albion, Michigan for his undergraduate work, graduating in 1950. He attended and graduated from medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He would eventually pass his boards as an Orthopedic surgeon.

While in med school he married his childhood sweetheart Nancy Hosman in 1951. They were married for 64 years. Following graduation, Harry became a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. Duty stations included Astoria, Oregon; Portsmouth, Virginia; Brooklyn, New York and Long Beach, California. While stationed in Oregon, Harry was called upon to make several ship to ship transfers to assess the medical condition of sailors on cargo ships trying to cross the treacherous Columbia River Bar. It was also during his naval days that Harry and Nancy began raising a family consisting of a daughter and three sons

In 1965, Harry left the Navy and settled into private practice at Marysville Medical Clinic (later to become Sutter North Medical). There he spent his medical career until his retirement in 1993. He did the first cervical surgery in the community and was Chief of Staff at Rideout Hospital for a time. What Harry enjoyed most though was treating his pediatric patients. He loved working with the kids and helping to allay their fears- even to the point of putting a cast on a teddy bear! Harry also worked with the kids at Virginia School out in Wheatland, CA who had cerebral palsy or other bone afflictions; he truly loved his monthly visits to see them. Harry also mentored older students allowing them to tag along to see what medicine and surgery entailed.

Following retirement Harry and Nancy traveled both at home and abroad. But their favorite trips have been in the travel trailer taking the grandkids to the coast or to their cabin near Dunsmuir, CA.

Harry was predeceased by his son Kenneth. He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Krista Sloan (Terry), and sons Keith Lawrie and Kevin Lawrie (Regan) all of Yuba City, CA. He has six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Margaret McGill of Lindsay, Ontario Canada, his nieces Lynn Skuce and Lawrie Hancock and grandnieces and grandnephews all of Canada.

The family is thankful for the wonderful care provided by Summerfield Senior Residence, in particular to Chantel Gildea and her staff in Compass Rose; Dad was a member of their extended family, not a patient. We are also extremely grateful to Sutter North Hospice. Their compassionate care extended not only to Dad, but to our entire family.

As per Harry's wishes, no public services are planned. In our father's memory and name, the family would like to suggest donations to Sutter North Hospice at 400 Plumas Blvd. #115, Yuba City, CA 95991.
