James Henry Cloyd Obituary

James Henry Cloyd, Sr., 83, passed on April 6, 2016 surrounded by loving family. He was born May 25, 1932 to parents Leonard Oliver Cloyd, Sr. and Sally Elizabeth (Hensley) in E. Bernstadt, Kentucky. Known to friends as Jim, he attended Viva School and graduated from Hazel Green High School. He grew up on a farm growing hemp for rope, potatoes, corn, and tobacco. While living in Cincinnati, Ohio he worked for Fischer Motors building Chevrolet cars and then Lukenheimer's in Fairmount, OH where he was a hand screw operator machinist. He entered the Air Force in 1951 and served as a dispatcher. He also drove for Major General James McCormack and Generals Kirk Landon and Donald Putt. His first assignment was in Baltimore, Maryland where he met and married his wife Mary Kirkman. From there he went to Ankara, Turkey; Roswell, New Mexico; Pease AFB, New Hampshire; Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada; Beale AFB, California; Hickam, Oahu, Hawaii; and McGuire AFB, New Jersey where he retired after serving 20 years as a Staff Sergeant working in avionics. While stationed at Hickam he served a tour in Tulewa, Vietnam, leaving just before the Tet Offensive.

After moving back to California, he and wife Mary ran the Rocket Gas Station at the main gate to Beale AFB working as an auto mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing with his good friends Troy and Wanda Sickels who ran the World Travelers Trailer Court by the main gate to Beale where he lived. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He also attended Yuba College where he received his certifications in smog checks, refrigeration, welding, diesel engine repair, electronics and machine shop. He became an avid yard sale enthusiast, loved selling his finds at Simpson Lane Auction and Flea Market in Linda, California and loved telling jokes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 61 years, Mary Olive (Kirkman) Cloyd, sister Catherine Carrie, brothers (Leonard) Oliver, Jr., Jack Lee, and Vernon Charles Cloyd. He was survived by his brother Orville (Sonny) Wright, sisters Edna Marie (Browning), Janet Sue (Harmeyer), and brother Ronnie Edward Cloyd. He leaves behind his children Mary Rose (John Thordsen) of Yuba City, Sally Elizabeth (Kailihiwa) of Yuba City, Becky Sue (Paul Christensen) of Marysville and son Dr. James Henry Cloyd, Jr. (Holly) of Utah; grandchildren, Ericka (Sam) Hedley, James (Lizette) Bradley, Rose (Matthew) Weidert, Helen Weidert, and Mary (Orri) Barnes; Dereck Jay (Ronnie) Kailihiwa, Jason Kailihiwa, Tyrell Kailihiwa, and Cody Kailihiwa; Whitney (Brian) Welch, Madison (Brandon) Curtin, Chase, Chance, and Lunden Marove Cloyd; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service is set for May 14, 2016, 9 a.m. at the Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, California. Bishop Brian Jukes of the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Buttes Vista Ward, Yuba City Stake, will officiate. Interment is under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel of Yuba City, CA.
