Jeanne Williams Arrowsmith Obituary

Jeanne Williams Arrowsmith, born February 3, 1929 in Oakland, CA, passed peacefully in her sleep on May 29, 2014. She was 85.

A graduate of Palo Alto High School, she then graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a double major in Rhetoric and History and became a lifelong member of Alpha Chi. She received her Special Education credential from San Jose State. Her emphasis was in dyslexia and additional reading disabilities.

Upon graduation, she married Dirck W. Arrowsmith who had recently returned from service as a Naval Officer in World War II.

Upon moving to Yuba City in 1961, Jean taught at Lincrest, Bridge Street, and Park Avenue, before starting a private tutoring business from her home. Her proudest moments were when students sought her out and told her she had changed their lives because of her love, encouragement and skills in teaching.

Jean is survived by her husband, Dirck, of 65 years, her brother, Bart Williams, of Marysville, and her three children, Susan Arrowsmith McFerson (William) of Sacramento, Barbra Arrowsmith of Santa Rosa, and Stephen Arrowsmith of Chico; her two grandchildren, Molly McFerson Smith (Craig) of Yuba City and Jamie Lou McFerson of Sacramento.

Jean participated in many local civic organizations, including Alpha Sigma and President of Rotary Inner Wheel. Her greatest contributions came from her local PEO Chapter VU. PEO is a philanthropic educational organization that helps girls and women continue their higher education. She was a charter member of this chapter and past president. Jean and Dirck attended Trinity Life Anglican Church.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: T.I.P. Trauma Intervention Program, P.O. Box 645, Marysville, CA 95901, (530) 673-9300.
