Jesse A. Carrithers Obituary

Dr. Jesse A. Carrithers passed away April 27, 2015 in Bakersfield, CA, days short of his 96th birthday.

Jesse was born in Anthony, Kansas on May 2, 1919, raised in Phoenix, AZ and Long Beach, CA where "the surf, before they built the breakwater, was far better than Hawaii". He resided in Sutter County since 1953.

After serving eight (8) years in the US Navy, as a young enlistee and Naval aviator, piloting the PBM-Mariner during WWII, he attended the University of Southern California and USC Dental School. Thereafter he and his wife, Betty, relocated their growing family to Yuba City in 1953, opening a dental practice, raising five children, a prune orchard, supporting myriad of their children's 4-H and FFA projects and other interests.

He was curious, well read and well traveled, always quick with a quip or a kindness.

His interests in geology and travel had origin from his father Jesse, an eminent Geologist and explorer, and his interests in art from his mother, Alberta Hachenberg.

He cherished his time in his prune orchard, awed by the Sutter Buttes nearby, whether planting the trees or taking time off from his practice to do the irrigation himself, often with cold beer in hand on 100+ degree days. He loved the great American West and landscape and often said "Had the Pilgrims landed on the west coast, the east coast would remain undiscovered".

He was an avid USC football devotee and followed track & field religiously, the residual passion of being a sprinter as a boy, and young man.

Jesse and Betty Carrithers had five (5) children: Jay - Sacramento, CA; Kathryn - Newport, OR La Penita, Mexico, Jim - Juneau, Alaska; Jon - Bakersfield; Jeff - Lisbon, Portugal Vancouver Island, B.C.

Carrying on the legacy are eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Bakersfield, CA, on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:45 am at the National Veterans Cemetery, 30338 E Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin, CA 93203. A gathering of family and friends will follow at The Petroleum Club in Bakersfield.

In lieu of flowers or other, please donate to your local Humane Society or adopt a pet or donate to the American Civil Liberties Union.
