Joyce Ellen Friedman Obituary

Joyce Ellen Friedman, 71, of Durham, CA, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2015, at her home. Joyce's death leaves behind an emptiness in the hearts of those who loved her. We are thankful to our Father God for the many precious memories and for the lifetime of love she shared with her family and friends. "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

Joyce was born on March 24, 1944, in Oklahoma City, OK, the daughter of Martin "Dale" and Clemmie Murphey. She was raised in Live Oak and Gridley and graduated from Gridley High School in 1962. After graduation, she attended Pasadena Nazarene College and California State College (now CSU, Chico), where she graduated in June 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. After receiving her degree, she worked in public accounting for six years, attaining her license as a Certified Public Accountant. Joyce returned to her college alma mater in January 1975 as the University's Internal Auditor. She later moved to the Associated Students of CSU, Chico, where she retired in December 2010, as the organization's chief financial officer.

On August 20,1965, she was united in marriage to the late Martin R. Friedman at the Live Oak Church of the Nazarene. The couple lived near Fort Sill, OK, before making their home in Durham, CA, in 1966. Joyce and Martin celebrated 37 years of marriage before Martin's passing. They volunteered time for many years to help at the annual Durham Picnic by organizing and running the Horseshoe Tournament.

While working at the Associated Students, Joyce was instrumental in the development and implementation of accounting computer software used at Chico State and other universities across the country. As a part-time consultant for Bi-Tech Software, she worked with many of the first sites to set up and use the IFAS system. She served as a board member and various leadership capacities with BSNUG (Bi-Tech Software National Users Group, Inc.) since its inception in 1985, and organized conferences and professional development opportunities for the members.

Joyce and her late husband were award winning bowlers and played in many local leagues, where Joyce served in a variety of positions, and competed in tournaments throughout California and Nevada. Joyce was named to the Chico Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2007 for Meritorious Service. She also enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin R. Friedman in 2003; parents, Martin "Dale" and Clemmie Murphey of Live Oak; brothers, Glenn Murphey of Live Oak and Jerry Lee Murphey and nephew Jerry Wayne Murphey.
