Katherine Marshall Obituary

January 30, 1926 - April 22, 2015

Katherine Asenath (Colton) Marshall of Waterford, California passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family who loved her on April 22, 2015 following a long battle with cancer. She is now at home with her Lord Jesus in Heaven. She was 89.

Katherine was born January 30, 1926 in Cortland Township, Illinois to Orson L. and Beulah Colton. She grew up in Waterman, Illinois and attended Waterman High School where she played saxophone in the marching band. After graduation from Waterman High School in 1944, she worked at the local weather station and then attended Aurora College in Aurora, Illinois for two years. On August 7, 1948, she married Robert H. (Bob) Marshall of Pasadena, California at the Somonauk United Presbyterian Church in Somonauk, Illinois. Soon after they were married, they moved to San Luis Obispo, California where Bob attended Cal Poly under the GI Bill. Their first son, Stephen, was born there in 1950. Following Bob's graduation from a three year program in animal husbandry, the family moved to Wheaton, Illinois. Bob and Kay's second son, Jeffrey, was born there in 1952. Shortly after, they moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa.

In 1956, the family moved back to California. Kay was a homemaker while her boys were growing up. They lived in Monrovia, El Monte, and Baldwin Park before buying a home in Covina in 1962. Kay took classes in accounting and when the boys were old enough she went to work as a bookkeeper, including for World Vision and for Thru the Bible Radio Ministries in Pasadena.

Kay loved to travel. Summer vacations with her family included trips by car to Illinois to visit family and trips to National Parks including Sequoia, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Crater Lake. She also twice took her two boys from Los Angeles to Chicago and back by train. For their 25th Anniversary in 1973, Kay and Bob spent two weeks in Hawaii. Kay's favorite vacation was the three weeks she and Bob spent visiting Steve and Janice when they were stationed in Germany with the U. S. Air Force.

In 1991, Bob and Kay moved to Yosemite Lakes Park near Coarsegold. They enjoyed their retirement home there and made new friends through church. Kay enjoyed collecting rocks and this was a good area for that. In 2004, they moved into an addition to their son Jeff's new home in Waterford. Kay treasured her friends and family and always kept in touch.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Orson and Beulah Colton, by her brother Ralph Colton, and by her sisters Mabel Colton, Audria Neiman, and Helen Govig. She is survived by Robert, her husband of 66 years, by her sister Ora Sell (Robert) of San Diego, by her sons Stephen Marshall (Janice) of Yuba City and Jeffrey Marshall of Waterford, by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
