Lorne R. (Dick) Strom was born December 17, 1936 to Harvey and Alberta Strom in Seattle, WA. At age 16, Dick enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served 21 years. In 1959, he married Elizabeth (Liz) Phillips of Wheatland, CA. Dick served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he earned the Air Medal for bravery and service. Dick retired from the Marines in 1975 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Dick then followed his dream of being an Alaskan bush pilot and later worked for Alyeska Pipeline Service in Valdez, AK. Dick and his family lived in Valdez for 18 years, where he was very involved with the community. Activities included: Valdez Gold Rush Days, the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, the Al-Aska Shriners, Past Patron of the Eastern Star, and President for the local American Legion. Dick was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a founding member of the Civil Air Patrol in Valdez. He retired from Alyeska in 1994. Then, Dick and Liz toured the country visiting friends and relatives. Later, they lived in Smith River, CA and Earp, CA. Dick died peacefully with his family by his side on February 15, 2013.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Ullrey Memorial Chapel in Yuba City at 11 a.m. followed by Dick's burial with military honors in Wheatland, CA.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Liz, of 54 years; his children: Rick of Winnemucca, NV, Eric (Laura) of Beaverton, OR, Wendi (David) of Jacksonville, FL; and his four grandchildren: Ben, Hailey, Katie, and Lexie. He is also survived by sister-in-laws: Elaine Tarke of Meridian and Marion Phillips of Yuba City; and numerous other family in the Yuba-Sutter area.
