Mae Scott Obituary

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, October 15, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery for Mae J. Scott, 91 of Yuba City, CA. She passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at The Courtyard in Yuba City of natural causes. She was born on January 30, 1919 in Stronghurst, Illinois to her parents, Draper and Nancy Quesenberry. Mae was a long-time resident of Yuba City, and she was a member of the Linda Church of Christ. She began her working career at the Caterpillar plant in Peoria, Illinois. Later, because of the strong patriotism in the country and WW II, she joined the Navy and served her country. Her first duty station was Treasure Island, CA where she met her husband, Jack J. Scott, who was also in the Navy. She completed her tour of duty and began her family as a military wife and mother. A favorite saying of hers was "behind every good military man was a good military wife". A favorite memory is of the "passing in review" at her Navy training graduation ceremony. In the mid 1960's she took the job of Cafeteria Manager for Barry School and served students at Barry, Lincoln and Lincrest Schools. Generations of students still remember Mrs. Scott. Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Jack J. Scott. They were married 61 years. Mae was also preceded in death by her brothers Marvin and Harry Quesenberry, and sisters Mabel Towler, Nancy Quesenberry and Sybil Quesenberry. Mae is survived by her 2 daughters: Marsha Shields (Larry) and Ellen Root (Dale) both of Yuba City, CA; 2 sons: Robert Scott of Chico, CA and Dennis Scott (Kandi) of Yuba City, CA. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Jennifer Duran (Eric) of Gridley, CA, Scott Shields of Alabama and Courtney Scott of Chico, CA; and a great grandson, Owen Fountain of Gridley, CA. She is also survived by her sisters Ruby Crabill of IL, Mary Greene of FL, Margie Wilde of AZ and her brother Clinton Quesenberry of IL. A Visitation will be held Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Gridley- Block Funeral Chapel. Mr. Steve Foster of the Linda Church of Christ and the VFW will officiate at the graveside service. Interment will be held at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. A special thank you to all the staff at The Courtyard for their most excellent care, love and support of our mother while she lived with you. We may forget your names, but we will never forget how you made her your own. Also a special thank you to Dr. Nakashima for the excellent care you gave our mother, and for all those special funny stories you always had ready for her. She always looked forward to seeing you. Contributions in memory of our mother to The Courtyard, 1240 Williams Way, Yuba City, CA 95993 are suggested by the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel. I remember my Aunt Mae as smiling and energetic. When I was small, she and my Uncle Jack would occasionally invite my family to their house for a large sit-down dinner. There were always home-grown vegetables, duck or venison -- plenty of everything to share with extended family visitors at the house on Rancho Way. Oddly enough I remember the large bumble-bees buzzing in some of the windows of the living area downstairs. These are only childhood fragments. But she genuinely seemed like a strong woman who could keep her family together single-handedly if required. When she'd dash off the occasional handwritten note to my mother Ann, she'd always sign it, "Mae, Scotty and Crew." I always enjoyed reading that closing. To Mae's children (my four cousins), I am sorry for your loss. ---Geri.
