Marjorie (Norby) Cosens Obituary

In loving memory of Marjorie Norby Cosens, who passed away August 31, 2017, at the age of 92.

Born in Marysville, CA, where her parents settled after the war, December 16, 1924, to Florence Allen Norby and Erling S. Norby.

Marge graduated from Palo Alto High School Class of 1942, where she was a member of the swim team. She attended San Jose State in pre-nursing in 1942-1944, sharing an apartment with her sister, Barbara Norby (later Schoenig).

She went on to join the Cadet Nursing Corps and graduated from Stanford University School of Nursing with a Bachelors Degree in 1947, and passed her State Boards to become a registered nurse – R.N. With the war over she served as a visiting nurse in San Francisco.

Marge married Richard Donald Cosens on February 28, 1953, and settled in Strawberry Valley where they raised their two children. While in Strawberry Valley, Don worked for Soper-Wheeler Company as head Forester and Vice-President while Marge became a leader in the community serving as ad-hoc nurse in the hills. She gave insulin shots, ran a well-child clinic and responded to car accidents and led the youth groups her children joined.

When her children entered high school in Marysville, Marge pursued her certificate in public health nursing at UCSF. She became the school nurse at Marysville High and later Lindhurst High where, in addition to nursing all who became ill or injured, she advised the Paramedics Club and inspired others to pursue careers in nursing.

After a rewarding career she retired in 1986, and took up golf and travel with her husband Don. In the mid 1990's, Don and Marge moved to Marysville and were very involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren.

In 2003, Marge lost Don, her husband of almost 50 years, to a long illness. In 2012, when her own illness became too difficult to manage on her own she moved to Folsom, California, to be near family. She retained her marvelous sense of humor and joy for life throughout these years.

Deeply loved by her family, Marge was preceded in death by husband Don; sister Barbara; brother Charles; and grandson Brett.

She is survived by daughter Barb (husband Gene Allwine); son Doug (wife Terry, grandson Ryan and granddaughter Maren); nieces, Susan and Karen Schoenig, Roseanne Singh and their families; and nephews, Charles Schoenig (and family), David Brown and Jonny Smee (and family); and sister-in-law Ruby Schoenig.
