Mavis Margie Rider Obituary

Mavis Margie Rider, passed away on December 15, 2016, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She was born in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, on April 14, 1929, to Melissa and Leonard Mitchell.

Mavis married for the first time, at age 16, to Glenn Lutz which lasted nine years. She then went on to become an Arthur Murray dance instructor. In the late fifties, she went to work for Lucky Grocery Store in Yuba City, where she went on to become the first female head clerk in the history of Lucky stores. In 1960, she married Norman Rider. They soon opened Norm's Market on Franklin Road. Within that store they opened the Yuba Sutter Trade School which was designed to train grocery clerks. This was one of the earliest trade schools in Northern California. After retiring, Mavis and Norm began selling antique glass and traveled all over the western states buying and selling glass, specializing in Depression glass. Mavis was very entrepreneurial and was often ahead of her time in many of her endeavors. They retired to Carson City, Nevada and later moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The family would like to thank the staff at the Murfreesboro Veterans Home for the care and nurturing of Mavis and Norm until their passing.

Mavis is survived by her son Jim Lutz (Angel) of Colusa and daughter Rorye Keith (Alan) of Florida, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman Rider, daughter Susan Lutz , and grandson Nicholas Lutz.

Mavis will be remembered at a family gathering on May 6, 2017, in Colusa.
