A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014, 11:00 am at the Gridley Biggs Cemetery for Melvin W. Justeson, 92 of Gridley CA. Melvin passed away on December 31, 2013 in Gridley CA.
Melvin was born on October 12, 1921 in Gridley CA to Joseph and Mary Justeson.
Melvin was the youngest of 12 children (Sadie, Mont, Cort, Cowley, Reed, Doyle, Alex, Elba, Myrtle, Iva, Edith). Melvin grew up on the Justeson family farm where he worked rice land and tended cattle. He would reminisce about the long days; hard work and stubborn attitudes of the cattle on the dairy; and about how he would get up early to milk the cows before leaving for school. As he would say, "It was just the way it was in those days. Everyone worked hard." Melvin was a famer and lifelong resident of Gridley California, attending local schools and graduating from Gridley High School. Known as "Gummy" to some and "Uncle Mel" to others, his family and friends were a source of enjoyment throughout his life. He treasured his lifelong friendships with classmates and many Tuesday evenings were spent enjoying good food and good company at the Gridley Moose Lodge. Melvin was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Army Medical Corp and achieving the rank of Sargent. Traveling was one of his passions. Melvin and his wife Lenora (Lee) traveled the world forming bonds and making memories. An avid hunter and fisherman, if it flew, ran or swam, Melvin was on it. He never missed a deer season. This was a pastime he enjoyed throughout his life, with his last hunting trip into the Buttes at age 91.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Lenora; sister, Iva Johnson of Southern Cal; nephew, Gary Justeson; great nephews, Michael, Jason, Joe, Jon, Jeremy Justeson; and great- great nephew, Alec Justeson of Gridley.
