Michael Alexander (Mike) Fortwengler Obituary

Michael (Mike) Alexander Fortwengler, 78, of Yuba City, California, succumbed to complications from Guillain-Barre Syndrome surrounded by his family on June 11, 2015.

Mike is survived by his fiancé Lorna Yatman; ex-wives Grace Canby and Sue Fortwengler; daughters Frances (Jeff) Phillips, Patti (Will) Wasson, Nancy (John) Glinka and Heidi (Eric) McFarland; sons David (Kathy) Fortwengler, Michael (Lalana) Fortwengler and Kevin (Karen) Fortwengler; seven grandchildren; one nephew, and extended family. Mike was a loving father, dedicated "wasband", animal lover, and friend to all.

Mike was a cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer for the American Cancer Society (18 years) and Rideout Cancer Center (15 years), and served for many years as a facilitator for the Alzheimer's Aid Society. In 2014, Mike was awarded the prestigious Lane Adams Quality of Life Award for his years of exemplary service in improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Countless individuals and their families have been touched by Mike's compassion and uplifting sense of humor in dealing with life-changing conditions.

Mike also was an employee of Lockheed Martin and then an entrepreneur with his own businesses; Central Valley TV, House of Color TV and Kay's Parcel Service. His hard work ethics and sense of humor blessed everyone that knew him.

Mike was a US Navy Veteran, having served in the Korean War from 1953-1957 on the USS "Mighty O" Oriskany. He was a past member of Rotary Club, Lions Club, and American Legion. He taught computer classes at the Yuba City Library. A lifelong passion for learning, with interests in computers, technology, photography, fishing, pets, gardening, food, sweets, and above all, friendship. Mike was a profound animal lover, having cared for countless dogs, cats, a donkey, sheep, birds, bees, fish and even a wayward emu.

A Celebration of Mike's Life will take place Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the Rideout Cancer Center at 618 Fifth Street, Marysville, CA from 3pm-5pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the GBS and Alzheimer's Aid Society.
