Michael E. McFarland Obituary

April 12, 1949 - August 16, 2016

Michael E. McFarland, 67, passed away in the arms of his loving wife Nancy on August 16, 2016 from complications of Lou Gehrig disease. Michael was born on April 12, 1949 at Scotia Hospital in Scotia, CA to Pauline (Lea) McFarland and Luie McFarland.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Nancy McFarland, son Andrew McFarland (Marie), son Derek McFarland (Regina), grandchildren Ian, Henry, Ellie, Samantha and Cristen, brothers David McFarland (Marsha), Tim McFarland (Pam) and Ramon Rivera, sisters Tammy Howeth (Rick), Sue Negrillo (Jaymes) and Rosemary Young; father-in-law Jesse Self, brother-in-laws George Self (Debbie), Ron Self (Silvia) and sister-in-law Chris Miles (Larry) and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Michael was preceded in death by his mother Pauline Lea, father Luie McFarland, step-mother Nettie McFarland, and mother- in-law Gayle Self.

Michael's family moved from Rio Dell when he was a child back to Live Oak where Michael spent the rest of his life. He worked for his Father during his high school years, becoming a partner later in Luie & Sons Disposal Service. When his father retired, Mike became sole owner and renamed the company Mike's Disposal Service, which he later sold to YSDI in 1980. Mike continued to work for YSDI for 32 years until extraordinary circumstances left him wheel chair bound in 2012.

His love of gardening inspired his fellow employee owners at YSDI to create raised garden beds with easy access for his wheelchair. Michael loved to play his guitar in church and was part of the Praise and Worship group at The Father's House in Live Oak. Michael also enjoyed camping and spending time with family around the campfire. He loved the times most recently spent at Emerald Forest Campground in Trinidad and renting a house in Fort Bragg, with all his siblings and their spouses.

A Celebration of Michael's Life will be held at The Father's House in Live Oak on Sunday, August 21, at 3:00 p.m., with a dinner following the Services.
