Michael Murphy Obituary

Michael Harris Murphy, 72, died Thursday, August 24, 2017, in his home after a brief battle with cancer. He leaves his wife of fifty-one years, Judy Murphy; his son, Sean Murphy; his daughter, Liz Sayles and her husband, Scott Sayles; and grandchildren, Billie Jo Murphy, Colt Murphy, Hunter Murphy, Thomas Sayles, and Daniel Sayles.

Mr. Murphy was born in Yuba City, CA; the son of Herbert and Mary Murphy, and was a lifelong resident of Sutter, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Jim Murphy, Harold Murphy, Ben Murphy, and Betty Diplacito.

He attended Brittan Elementary and Sutter Union High School, where he met his wife, Judy Cochran and they were married in 1966. He joined the Navy in 1964, and served aboard the USS Forrestal and the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

After serving with the Navy, he joined the Carpenters Union and eventually ended up retiring from Colusa Tractor, after twenty years of employment. He became an expert with Shelbourne stripper headers, which are blue, earning him the nickname of Papa Smurf, amongst his co-workers. He not only took pride in his work, but truly relished the friends he made during his time there. Mr. Murphy was an avid deer hunter, and enjoyed his many hunting trips with friends and family. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

A memorial will be held at Sutter Cemetery on Friday, September 1st, 2017, at 11:00 am, followed by a potluck style reception to be held at the SYO in Sutter, CA. Flowers may be delivered to 7200 Butte Ave, Sutter, CA 95982.
