89 of Yuba City, CA passed away on February 20, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
Miriam was born May 24, 1923 in Marysville, CA to Dr Phillip and Lucille Hoffman. She is survived and will always be loved by her son Phillip Etchells, daughters, Susan Notarides, Joan Etchells, Nanci Etchells, granddaughters Anna Notarides and Samantha Barrett, grandsons Anthony Notarides and Aaron Etchells and great granddaughters Kayleigh Barrett and Lauren Emma Barrett. She was preceded in death by her sister Margery Johnson, son 'n' law Tony Notarides and husband John C. Etchells.
After graduating from Marysville High School, Miriam attended Stevens College and the University of Oregon and returned to the Yuba-Sutter area after the outbreak of World War 2 where she worked at Beale Air Force. While at Beale, She met Captain John C. Etchells. They were married on June 10, 1944 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. They were married for 48 years.
Miriam a lifelong member of the Yuba- Sutter community served as the president of the "Pink Ladies" for Rideout Hospital Auxiliary. In addition, she was a member of Yuba- Sutter Gamma Chapter of Alpha-Sigma, the N.E.Ps and the M&Ms. She enjoyed playing dominos and spending time at Donner Lake. She was well known for her cooking and was owner of two dining establishments: The Chain Shed Inn of Donner Lake, CA and Grandma S.A.Ms in Yuba City, CA.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 2, 2013 in her home. In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Freemont-Rideout Foundation or Golden Gate Basset Rescue in honor of Miriam Etchells and Baxter her beloved basset hound that brought her joy. Arrangements are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel (530) 673-9542.
