Nancy Lee Artist Obituary

Nancy Lee Artist, 72, of Yuba City, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2016. Nancy was born March 21st, 1944, to Elgin and Helen Love in Modesto, CA.

Nancy grew up in Modesto, CA and attended Downey High School where she graduated in 1961. She excelled in multiple sports, was the President of the Girls Athletic Association and was voted most athletic for her class. In 2012, she was elected into the Downey High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1962, Nancy attended Modesto Junior College where she obtained her GED and continued her athletic success. She then attended California State University, Chico where she completed her degree in Physical Education. At Chico State, Nancy lettered in Tennis, Field Hockey, Track, Badminton and Volleyball. At one point, she was the top ranked Badminton player in Northern California. In 2011, she was inducted into the Chico State Hall of Fame for her athletic accomplishments.

After college, Nancy went on to a 28 year teaching and coaching career at Yuba City High School and created an after school sports program that is still in use today.

Family was everything to Nancy and she especially loved being a grandparent. She was also very proud of her work with others living with disease since being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease herself in 1979. Though her life had changed since then, Nancy enjoyed many activities including riding her bike, photography, water skiing, watching Pro Football on TV and taking her dog, Lady, on long walks. As former U.S. Women's Olympic Track and Field Coach Dee Vochatzer described Nancy at her Chico State HOF induction ceremony: "she is truly an inspiration to us all."

Nancy is survived by her son Todd Artist (Gina) of Yuba City, CA, stepsons Brian Artist (Roline) of Logan, UT and Gary Artist (Naomi) of Anaheim, CA. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren Emily, Natalie and Easton Artist of Yuba City, CA, Beau, Chad and Annjolie Artist of Logan, UT, and Sean, Ally, and Blake Artist of Anaheim, CA. and brother Gary Love (Suzanne) of Modesto, CA.

She is preceded in death by her parents Elgin and Helen Love.

Memorial serivice will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond Street, Yuba City, CA.
