Norma Jean Montna Obituary

Norma Jean Montna, of Yuba City, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2017, after a short illness. Norma was born November 13, 1939, in Gridley, California. She was 77 years old and a lifetime resident of Sutter County.

Norma was a Navy wife and then went on to volunteer as a teacher's aide for special needs children for many years. She gave her time to Butte Vista School, Barry School, and Franklin School. She was co-owner of Muffler Master's with her husband, Larry, for many years. But most importantly, Norma was a dedicated wife, a devoted mother, a sister, an incredibly loving aunt, a wonderful friend and a servant to the Yuba-Sutter community and beyond.

Norma is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Larry Montna of Yuba City; a sister, Katherine Allen of the Yuba Sutter area; brother-in-law Pete Montna (wife Vicki Montna) of Yuba City; seven adoring nieces, and many great nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her only son, Larry "Butchie" Montna; father, Theodore Jensen; mother, Eunice Jensen; sister, Donna Mae Caramico and sister-in-law, Diane Montna.

Norma suffered enormous tragedy with the death of her son, Butchie, who was born with Down Syndrome, when they were both in an auto accident, hit by a drunk driver in 1977. She was also a breast cancer survivor and she could have easily given up, but instead she decided to give all to her family and community. Norma's list of achievements and activities is long and many will be forgotten simply because the list is too vast for anyone to gather. She was a longtime member of Kiwanis and eventually became the lieutenant governor of the northern region. Norma, along with Larry, assisted in the beginnings of Special Olympics in the Yuba-Sutter area years ago when it first began in this community. Norma and Larry had the idea, created and sat on the Board of Director's for Butchie's Pool, which served as a warm water therapy pool for special needs children, and ailing or injured adults. She belonged to Yuba Sutter Mercy Guild and chaired the infamous Headdress Ball for many years. She was a Soroptomist. Any given weekend you could find her cooking at a community pancake breakfast, tri-tip sandwich lunch, or a huge crab feed dinner. For many years, Norma, Larry and many others partnered with KUBA radio station and hosted a community Easter Egg Hunt that served thousands of children from the Yuba-Sutter area and benefited Butchie's Pool. Elected by the citizens of Sutter County, Norma served on the Sutter County School Board.

Among many of the awards Norma earned during her life she was presented "The Pedro Award" in 2015, for her 50 years of service to special needs children and was also presented with a "Women of the Year" award given by U.S. Representative John Garamendi in that same year.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 12, 2017, at Sierra View Memorial Park, 4900 Olive Ave., Olivehurst, CA., 95961. Immediately after the graveside service there will be a Celebration of Life gathering at Fotine's Catering & Event Center, 769 Plumas Street, Yuba City.
