Piara Singh Basra was born on April 13, 1928 to Naranjan Singh and Banti Kaur Basra in his maternal home of Phalpota, Punjab. Growing up in Mehli, Phagwara, he started work in the family business of ranching and farming. After working several years in the family business, he found his true calling in merchant trade. Soon after, he got married to his beloved, Resham Kaur (of Bharoli, Punjab) and started a family. After raising his children, he decided to immigrate to the United States of America.

He first arrived in Yuba City, at the age of 52 with his son, Jasbir on October 1, 1980 and started work as a farm laborer. He worked at Newhall Land and Farming Co and Sierra Gold Nursery. In 1984, his wife and remaining children joined him in the States. After working for several years, he took retirement to help raise and spend time with his grandchildren.

His hobbies included: gardening, socializing, networking, shopping, and most of all spending time with loved ones. He would spend his free time calling family members from all over the world. He loved to shower his friends and family with gifts, whether it was an item of clothing, produce, or household item, he never was empty handed. He always surrounded himself with family and friends.
