Ralph K. Beckley

Ralph K. Beckley 93, passed away peacefully at Alderson's Convalescent Hospital in Woodland on October 30, 2010. Born on April 29, 1917 in Grimes, he was a lifetime resident, living on the ranch where he was born with his wife Ophelia. Ralph was a farmer for the most of his life and was known for many years for the pumpkins he grew. Ralph was a World War II veteran serving with the 335th Infantry Regiment and fighting in Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge for which he received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. After being discharged from the army at the end of WW II Ralph returned to the family ranch. He married Ophelia Steinert on Nov. 28, 1946 in Grimes. When he was 20 years old in 1937, Ralph helped found the Grand Island Fire Department. He continued as member of the department for many years and was honored recently for his service. Besides being involved with the fire department, Ralph also was an active member of the community, serving on various boards, including the school board. He was also a 4-H leader. Ralph is survived his wife of almost 64 years, Ophelia; Son Steve Beckley and wife Stephanie of Woodland, Daughter Kris Charter and husband Jim of Williams. Ralph is also survived by grandchildren, Sean Beckley, Stacy Beckley, Mike Charter and wife Amber, and Nick Charter and wife Allison, and great- grandson Bryce Charter. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life which is scheduled for 11 a.m, Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Grand Island Fire Department in Grimes.
