Raymond Faris Shaeffer Obituary

Raymond Faris Shaeffer, great-grandson of Gridley and Pennington pioneer families, passed away on November 23, 2016. Raymond was the son of John and Gladys (Myers) Shaeffer. He was born on July 8, 1916, and he recently celebrated his 100th birthday. On November 16, he celebrated his 75th wedding anniversary with Yolanda, the love of his life. Raymond's wife and family were his greatest blessings.

Raymond graduated from Roseville High School in 1934 and from Davis College of Agriculture in 1936. He worked for Golden State and Foremost Dairies for 35 years. Upon retirement he worked part-time for Bremer Hardware in Gridley.

Raymond lived his life following the teachings of his faith and living the Boy Scout Code of Honor. He was an Eagle Scout, and as an adult he served as a scoutmaster for Troop 26 and an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 29. He helped organize a yearly Boy Scout Jamboree in the Sutter Buttes. Raymond was a member of a committee that organized and developed the Gridley Little League in the mid-1950's. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Italian Catholic Federation and a past governor and Life member of the Gridley Moose Lodge.

Raymond loved to hunt, fish, garden and travel. He also spent time farming on the family ranch in the Sutter Buttes. He and Yolanda visited all fifty states and went on many memorable cruises and trips abroad.

Raymond was preceded in death by his son Ryan. He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; sons Tyrone (Ardene) of Yuba City, Gary (Ruth) of Clovis, and Rodney (Cherie) of Anderson; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He loved to attend activities and events that his children and grandchildren were involved in.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 4 pm at Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel, followed by a Rosary at 6 pm. Mass will be held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 am, followed by the burial at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations to the Gridley Museum, Sutter North Health Care Hospice or .
