1933 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Richard Boyd (Dick) Givans Obituary

Richard (Dick) Boyd Givans, 83, was born September 2, 1933 in Sikeston, MO to Anna (Ryan) and Walter Givans. He passed away peacefully at his home of 51 years in Yuba City, CA on December 6, 2016.

In 1942, the family of three moved to Sacramento, CA where Dick grew up. He graduated from McClatchy High School in 1951, lettering in multiple sports. After graduating from what was then Sacramento State College, he started his teaching career at Kit Carson Jr High School in Sacramento.

In 1958, Dick married Doris Ruenell Knox and moved to Marysville, CA, where they both continued their teaching careers. He taught History, Social Studies and Physical Education at Alicia Middle School (Linda, CA), retiring in 1987 after 33 years of teaching. Dick also taught History to evening students at Yuba Community College. He was constantly running across former students and it was one of his favorite things to reconnect with them.

From 1972 to 1997, Dick was co-owner of Feather River Trophies in Yuba City, CA, providing awards throughout the northern state.

That final retirement allowed him and Ruenell to travel the world, exploring many of the places and historical sights he taught about in his long teaching career. He was particularly fond of traveling with family and close friends. In 2008, Dick and Ruenell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family cruise to Alaska, a travel highlight.

Grandkids started arriving during that travel phase of his life, and as those kids got older, his travel "destinations" started changing towards attending as many sporting events as possible to watch his granddaughters and grandsons. He was the ultimate "Grandpa Cheerleader!" His greatest joy was spending time with the grandchildren. He was an avid fan of sports at all levels.

Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruenell (Knox) Givans of Yuba City; three sons: Richard "Rick" of Elk Grove, Scott of Santa Barbara and Troy of Carmichael; five grandchildren: Scarlett Preuitt (Joe) of Penn Valley, Danielle of Santa Barbara, Baxter of Carmichael, John of Santa Barbara and Kira Givans of Carmichael; brothers-in-law: Kirvin Knox (Jan) of Colorado and Eirvin Knox (Eunice) of Munich, Germany; nieces: Kathy Wimmer of Connecticut, Caroline Murray of Wisconsin, Leslie Cousineau of Illinois and Ellen Knox of Munich, Germany and nephew, Seth Knox of Sonoma.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond St., Yuba City, CA 95991 on Saturday, December 17th at noon. A reception celebrating Dick's life will follow from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at The Plaza Room, 210 Julie Drive, Yuba City. CA 95991 in Hillcrest Plaza.

A private interment will be at Sutter Cemetery on December 19, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be given to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Ste. 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, www.pancan.org or a .
