Richard Gilman (Gil) Doss Obituary

Richard Gilman Doss (Gil), age 80, of Cottonwood, CA, died January 7, 2015, at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, CA, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Joseph and Mabel Doss of Cottonwood, CA. Dad was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Doss Jr., and our mother, Wanda Doss.

Dad and Mom were married right out of high school. They lived briefly in Cottonwood before settling in Meridian in 1955 with their first born son, Richard Doss Jr. Dad then purchased his first grocery store, Gil's Market and had his second child, Debbie. For the next four decades, Dad was a proud business owner and community member and his family grew with the addition of two more sons, Dana and Todd. In 1980, Gil and his son, Rick, purchased and operated his second store with the addition of a slaughter house, Meridian Meat Company. Dad was more than just a store owner, he loved his job and his customers were his friends! He knew everyone by name and took pride in the fact that his store was a daily gathering place for many townspeople where they could always get the Meridian town scoop and more! Kids loved Gils Market because it was the only place in town to grab a snack and get a soda pop! Gil retired in 1997 and moved to Cottonwood at which time his youngest son, Todd and wife, Kathleen, took over the day to day operations of the grocery store.

Gil was active in his community, serving on the Meridian Elementary School Board and Meridian Fireman's Association Board. He was also a Meridian Volunteer Fireman, a proud member of the Meridian Lions Club, Pack Leader for Meridian Cub Scouts and President of the Meridian Little League.

When Dad was not at the store, which wasn't very often, his hobbies included boating, water skiing, snow skiing or just listening to a good Giants or Kings game on his transistor radio. In Dad's younger days, his favorite thing to do on Sundays was to hang out on one of the sandbars on the river with his family and other Meridian families. Dad was known for his fast red ski boat, his beer carton sand shoes, and his awesome water skiing skills. Dad and Mom also loved to snow ski and play a little blackjack too! They built a cabin in Tahoe that our family and friends enjoyed with them throughout the years.

Gil is survived by his wife, BJ, of Cottonwood; four children; Rick (Debbie) Doss of Meridian, Debbie (Tom) Sivil of Ukiah, Dana Doss of Marysville, Todd (Kathleen) Doss of Meridian; grandchildren, Donovan Sivil of Ukiah, Miranda Jackson of Ukiah, Dana Doss of Red Bluff, Meshelle (Jonathan) Hindo of Marysville, Casey Doss of Meridian, Mitch Miller of Yuba City, Kristi (Scott) Goldby of Yuba City; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Evelyn, Emily, Cooper, Caden, Cody, Taylor, Tristen; sisters, Eva Rickert and Ruth Rickert; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives.

No memorial services are planned. We will be remembering our Dad at a private family gathering. Dad will be cremated as per his wishes. We look forward to reading any personal stories or memories of our Dad you wish to share online. Rick, Debbie, Dana and Todd.
