Richard Nelson Obituary
Richard Nelson
Richard R. Nelson, 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 while at home in Rio Oso, CA. Dick was born in East Nicolaus, CA on July 10, 1927. Dick grew up near Trowbridge, attended Marcum Illinois grammar school and East Nicolaus High School and lived in the Rio Oso-Nicolaus area his entire life.

Just before graduation from ENHS in 1945, he joined the US Navy and while on board ship to Hawaii the war suddenly ended and he spent two years at Pearl Harbor assisting the wind down of Pacific naval forces. Upon returning, he married his high school sweetheart Clara May (De Valentine). They settled in at the family farm, growing peaches, walnuts, and almonds and raising their three sons, Rick, Lan and Greg. Dick and Clara soon added rice property to the farm headquarters on Cornelius Avenue in South Sutter County. He loved farming and had a strong work ethic, which he proudly passed to his sons, along with a driving need to maintain strong personal integrity in his business and personal life.

Dick enjoyed hunting doves, pheasants and ducks, and going clam digging at Dillon Beach in northern Marin County. He also enjoyed being a member of the Sacramento Swiss Sports Club, the Wheatland Supper Club and for a time, the Elks Lodge in Marysville.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Carl J Nelson and Alva Hilma Maria (Soderstrom) Nelson and siblings Carl Nelson, Mae Brown, and Lorna Bonnifield. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Clara (De Valentine), sons Rick (Laurel Rodrigues) of Pleasant Grove, Leonard of Yuba City, and Greg (Tamra Newman) of Newcastle, 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Fairview Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, with interment at Fairview Cemetery. A reception will follow at River Oaks Golf Club, 201 Lee Rd, Nicolaus, CA.

Donations in memory of Richard Nelson to the East Nicolaus High School Spartan Foundation, P.O. Box 61, Nicolaus, CA 95659 would be greatly appreciated.
