Robert (Bob) Bacsvany Obituary

Robert (Bob) Bacsvany passed away on March 13, 2017 at the age of 80, in Chico, CA. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

He was born in Budapest, Hungary on May 30, 1936 to Frank and Elvira (Pal) Bacsvany.

Bob grew up playing soccer on the streets of Budapest. His athletic talent earned him a spot on the Hungarian soccer team and he won a gold medal in the 1952 Olympics held in Finland. Hungary was communist at the time so Bob sought asylum from neighboring Austria where he worked in a machine shop and played professional soccer for the Rapids.

At the age of 20, a sponsor in San Francisco helped him come to the United States where he met and married Barbara (Bacsvany) Erkson and had two children. After Hungary abandoned communism in 1989, Bob traveled to Budapest to visit his sister Zsuzsa Gerenyi Jozefne and her family.

Bob worked as a maintenance mechanic for Planters Peanuts and Anheuser Busch. After retirement, he called Gridley, CA his home. He loved bowling, golfing, watching movies, and playing cards.

Bob is survived by his two children, Susan Diadiw and Patricia Eaton and his grandchildren, Carlie Adams and Sydney Holderbein. He is predeceased by his mother and father, and granddaughter, Samantha Holderbein.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the home of his daughter.
