Lt. Col. Robert "Bob" Cloer Ret. Obituary

Lt. Col. Robert "Bob" Cloer, ret., was born in Porterville, CA on December 3, 1921 and died in Yuba City, CA on January 7, 2017.

His grandparents were pioneer homesteaders in the Porterville area. Their family was extensively involved in farming, which gave Bob a love of planting and harvesting. His attractive and productive gardens are a result. Equally loved was anything with a motor. He reluctantly gave up riding his motorcycle in his eighties.

Bob attended high school in Porterville; he was active in sports and Future Farmers of America (FFA). When World War II was declared, he enlisted and became an Airborne Troop Carrier pilot. When peace was declared, he ferried troops home and returned to civilian life.

The best part of that period was meeting and marrying a retired navy nurse, Peggy Gladney. They had a darling red-haired daughter, Kathleen. Civilian life ended when the Air Force called. Bob and his little family lived in many places in the world where his various talents were needed. Among his assignments were two tours of duty in the arctic, landing on skis, aerial refueling and assisting in the creation of airbases in the Indochina area.

Bob retired from Beale Airbase and has lived, to the present, in Yuba City. He was involved in various civic activities. Bob served his community and country well.

He is survived by his sister Pat Cloer Chambers, niece Ellen Georgi, nephews Bruce and Keith Chambers, cousin Carla Cloer and Peggy's nieces, Priscilla Howard Diaz and Donna Howard Raphael.

Bob had requested that his and Peggy's ashes be buried in the family plot in the Vandalia Cemetery in Porterville, CA. That is also the burial place of Kathleen, their daughter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., at the Harvest Room, 1475 Tharp Road, Yuba City.
