Robert (Bob) Gass Obituary

Robert "Bob" Gass, 75, of Plumas Lake, CA, passed away on December 22, 2015 at his vacation home in Sloat, CA.

Born on September 26, 1940 in Eureka, CA, Bob grew up in the Oroville area and attended Oroville High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and served honorably for three years. Bob went on to attend Chico State University and was a partner in a local pizza restaurant.

After college, Bob worked for Pacific Bell as a Yellow Pages Advertising Sales Representative. He retired after 28 years.

Never one to remain idle, in retirement Bob went on to indulge his passion for outdoor sports and worked as a ski instructor for 16 years at Sierra-At-Tahoe and Northstar Ski Resorts where he taught all levels of skiing from beginner to advanced. He was an active volunteer with the Yuba County Sheriff Sheriff's Teams of Active Residents in Service, or STARS. Bob was a Yuba County Fish & Game Commissioner and an active member of the Marysville Prostate Support Group.

When Bob learned about the Veterans in the Arts mural project in Marysville being planned by the Yuba-Sutter Arts Council, Bob was among the first veterans to sign up. Bob was working with a local professional artist as part of the program and had just completed his design concepts depicting his Army experiences as a paratrooper. The mural will be completed in his honor.

An avid gardener, Bob loved to share his horticultural knowledge with one and all.

Those who knew Bob will miss his passion for service to country and the local community, his outspokenness, his barbecued ribs, homemade preserves and grape juice and his incredible stories about his military service and jumping out of perfectly good airplanes which he did 43 times!

Bob will be missed by his family, friends and neighbors and is survived by wife, Caryl, his daughter Linda, sons Brian and Aaron, sister Janice and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for February 20, 2016. Details to follow.
