Robert Lee McNeill Obituary

Robert Lee McNeill, 86, of Meridian, CA, passed away on August 1, 2017, at his home. Robert was born in Meridian, CA, on August 16, 1930, to Oliver and Effie (Staas) McNeill. He was the oldest of five children.

He graduated from Alameda High school in 1948, and promptly enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Lawton near Seattle. He received an honorable discharge and returned to Meridian to farm with his aunt and uncle. Over the course of his life, he was an active member of Meridian Odd Fellows, Meridian Lions club, and the Meridian Volunteer Fire Department. Robert was a 50 plus year member of Enterprise Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons; Order of Eastern Star, Knights Templar; and West Sacramento Valley Shrine Club. He was also a founding member of the West Sutter Veterans' Hall Association that built and maintains the meeting/event hall in Meridian. He was also active with Yuba City First United Methodist Church and Meridian Methodist Church.

In February 1955, as a representative of the Meridian Lions Club, he escorted Sutter High School contestants to the Lion's Speech contest and met their teacher, Carol Burton. Robert and Carol married in December and made their home in Meridian where they raised two children. They were married 49 1/2 years, until her death in 2005. Robert's life revolved around agriculture and included working for various Sutter County farms, Pacific Guano, General (Pirelli) Cable in Colusa; Gibbs Wild Rice in Live Oak and intermittently for Sutter County Road Department and CalTrans District 3. If you were traveling over I-80 with him, he would happily share stories of his time as a "Sierra Snowfighter" plowing snow and laying "de-icing" agent.

When Robert wasn't busy working, he loved to fish, hunt, read, camp and garden. He could also be found supporting his children and other area children through 4-H, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts,
umpiring for Meridian Little League, chaperoning Rainbow Girls events and serving on the Advisory Board. He also taught Hunter's Safety courses for Meridian School and supervised the shooting range at Woodleaf's Outdoor Education camp on at least one occasion.

Robert is survived by his sister, Alice Hayes of Fresno, CA; son, George of Meridian; daughter, Robin Timoszyk (Matthew) of Yuba City; Granddaughter, Serena Timoszyk of Reno, NV, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Ron, Noel (Pete), and Milton McNeill.

Services will be held at 10:00am on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Yuba City First United Methodist Church 3101 Colusa Highway, Yuba City followed by graveside ceremony at the Meridian Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel.
