Roberta Kirk Shaeffer Obituary

Roberta Kirk Shaeffer, a grand lady of many talents, who enjoyed life to its fullest and whose 68 year partnership/marriage to her late husband Fred Shaeffer served her well, passed away peacefully February 16th at her home in District 10. She was 92 She had lived in the Yuba-Sutter area for 89 years.

Roberta was born May 29, 1922 in Woodland, California to her parents Maude & Gus Kirk and was the younger sister of the late Barbara Boyd along with her late brother Beverly Kirk. She graduated from Yuba City High School in June, 1940 and had planned to attend UC Berkeley, but because she went skiing and missed a test, she received a "D" grade in geometry and had to spend one semester at Santa Rosa JC living with her older sister, Barbara to make it up.

After that, she indeed went to Berkeley where she was member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and also met Fred Shaeffer. They were married in August, 1943 and Roberta graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1944.

Her hair was a beautiful curly dark copper red and needless to say, until she began to turn gray, she always stood out in a crowd.

She and Fred were charter member of the Peach Tree Golf & Country Club. And for 29 years she and her group "The Peach Pits" entertained twice a year at the Ladies' Invitational - she sang and played the trombone. She was the Treasurer of "Nine Easy Pieces", a birthday group that took annual trips to the seashore at Carmel and Aptos or gambling in Reno. She belonged to the Twin Cities Riding Club for several years. Also, she served on the "Swing at Cancer" golf tournament domino Association and was also a member of Gama Chapter of Alpha Sigma.

She loved horses, golf, tennis, music and was blessed with an admirable singing voice. She loved entertaining people and making them laugh. By her own admission, "I had a wonderful life".

Roberta is survived by her three children, Caryl Shaeffer of Roseville, California, Laura Lackey of Chico, California and Kirk Shaeffer of Roseville, California; four grandchildren, Mark Lackey (wife, Michi), Jeff Lackey (wife, Dacia), Jake Lackey and Mollee Madrigal (husband, Matt) and six great-grandchildren, Emma and Jack Lackey, Lily, Luke, and Audrey Madrigal and Conan Lackey.

A service will be held Wednesday, February 25th at 11 am at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond Street, Yuba City with a reception immediately following at the River Oaks Ranch, 10850 State Highway 70, Marysville.

"The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions- the little soon forgotten charities of a kiss or smile, a kind look, a heartfelt compliment, and the countless infinitesimals of pleasurable and genial feeling."
-Samuel Taylor Coleridge
