Obituary Condolences

Ruby Adeline Vaughan Johnson, 92, of Gridley, California, passed away peacefully, on October 22, 2013, joining her beloved Elwood ""Johnny"" Johnson, who preceded her in death on June 3, 1978.

Ruby was born in Alma, Nebraska, on February 21, 1921. She was the youngest of two daughters born to Harry and Dollie Vaughan. Besides her loving husband Johnny, Ruby was preceded in death by both her parents and her sister Velva Pahl.
Ruby is survived by her children, daughter Jeannette Baldwin of Roseville, son Jerry Johnson and wife Nikki of Lake Wildwood, daughter Judy Pruett and husband James of Gridley and son Jim Johnson and wife Carol of Hayward; grandchildren, Chanda Ingalls of Rocklin, Kyndra Hedden and husband Bobby of Folsom, Jake Johnson of Hayward and Erin Schmidt of Chico; step-grandchildren, TJ Pruett, Crystal Pruett and Jeremy Miller, all of Oroville. Ruby was surrounded by many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family, all of whom she loved dearly.
Ruby spent her younger years on her Grandparent's farm in Nebraska. During her adolescent years, because of her father's health, she and her parents moved numerous times between Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and finally coming to Redlands, California. She then attended the University of Redlands, graduating May 31, 1941.

In 1941, Ruby started her teaching career in Earlimart, California, where she met her future husband, Johnny Johnson. The following year she taught at Banning, California. Ruby and Johnny were married July 11, 1943, and moved to Gridley to start a co-operative farm with several of Johnny's friends from college.
A dedicated farmer's wife, mother and grandmother, Ruby also continued her teaching career. After 28 years of teaching, she retired from Nuestro School, in Sutter County, in May 1988.

Ruby was an active member of the Live Oak Church of the Brethren for 70 years. For many of those years she served as choir director and organist. She also was a church board member, moderator, and up until age 90, was the church financial secretary.

Ruby enjoyed camping, volunteering at the Gridley library, playing games-cards-puzzles, reading and spending time with family and friends. These were truly the joys of her life. And let's not forget, Ruby never missed watching her San Francisco Giants play.

Music was the thread that ran from the beginning to the end of Ruby's life. She started singing around the age of 5 for family functions. Throughout her school years and church life she sang in numerous choirs. She played the violin, piano and taught herself to play the guitar and organ. Her beautiful and true soprano voice was in perfect harmony with Johnny's rich tenor. Together they sang wonderful duets throughout their lives together.

A Celebration of Ruby's life will be held at the Live Oak Church of the Brethren, on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Ruby Johnson Memorial Fund, Live Oak Church of the Brethren, 1990 Archer Avenue, Live Oak, CA 95953; or Gridley Friends of the Library, In Memory of Ruby Johnson, P.O. Box 356, Gridley, CA 95948.
