Russell Smotherman Obituary

Russell Steven Smotherman known as Steve or Smut to those who knew him. He was a resident of Yuba/Sutter County. He was born December 2, 1949 and went to be with his Savior on September 24, 2010. Steve's job was a construction estimator, but his life's mission was to see everyone he knew come to know the Lord. Steve was miraculously changed by the power of God at age 18 after being healed from a motorcycle injury. He showed up at New Life after a co-worker invited him to a youth service at New Life with the promise that he could meet girls. And boy did he meet a jewel, Juanita Pearl his wife of 38 years! He answered the altar call and Pastor Hood prayed for him. He was healed of bone cancer, gave his heart to the Lord and his life was changed, a heritage born. From that moment on Steve lived every day of his life searching for people who needed the same miracle in their lives. He was known as a faithful husband, loving father, the GREATEST PAPA EVER, devoted son, brother, dear friend, and pillar of the faith. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Emily Smotherman. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Nita, children, Steve, Stacy, Ben, Neicy, Jason, Brooke and Alyssa. His grand kids, Chase, Chloe, Miriam, Macy, & Jayden and many, many other family & friends. It is overwhelming the number of lives that were changed because, Steve, chose to follow Christ. We know that we will see him again and can't wait for that moment. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Friday, October 1, 2010 at 2pm. New Life Assembly in Olivehurst, Ca. Memorial Fund in care of New Life Assembly. Send Condolences www.appealdemocrat.com

At the age of seven, you came to live with my family and I. You held me on your shoulders daily as we walked to the corner store to buy a pickle... You slept on my living room floor, you ate at my table. You were my brother, father figure and friend. As I look at your pictures I still can't believe that you are gone. My heart has been heavy with the thoughts of never seeing you on this earth again, but I know that some day we will meet again with the one who we both serve and Love. Jesus Christ... What a difference He has made in our lives. I will forever miss you but know that one day we will all be together with our families and the Lord.

35 years as a Christian and I have never met anyone as faithful to Jesus and to the church and to the ministry and to his friends as Steve. He was on a level all his own in that reguard. When the Israelites were battling the Amalekites and Aaron and Hur had to hold up Moses hands for the victory to be won is a portrait of Steve Smotherman. There has never been anyone in this church who has been so faithful to hold up the pastor's hands in times of struggle like Steve. I so miss my friend, confidant, counselor, breakfast partner and... oh shush... now I am crying...

Steve was a good brother in the Lord. A good husband and father. He was always willing to talk about spiritual things and to read his Bible and think. He will be forever missed. He went out in victory and that gives us hope and joy.

What a hero to so many people. He treated all the kids (like me) as if we were his own and you felt the fatherly love he carried. He was always laughing and speaking good things into everyone he came in contact with. He hoped and believed in the best in people. He loved his family and was so involved and that is why his kids turned out to be beautiful amazing people. You will be missed Mr. Smotherman!

To Our Sweet Nita & family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your loving Soul Mate, Father & Papa. This world lost a great man but heaven gained a warrior. Steve's famous words when he saw you were "Well Praise The Lord" & "God Bless You". Those words were always encouraging. I believe that is what he loved to do is to encourage people and lift them up. He wanted them to know that there is always hope through Jesus. We will always remember him. Our thoughts & prayers are with you all.
Love & Friends Always,
Bill & Angie Hoggard & Family

Daddy,
I will miss you. In my timing you left me too soon, but I know in God's time it was just right. I remember us reading the verse in Ecc 3:11, he has placed eternity in our hearts so that no man may know the beginning from the end. We cannot comprehend what God's plan is but know it is good and right. Eternity is in my heart and won't stop following after it. I will committ to doing the things that are eternal. Thanks for the example you were to me. Thanks for the strength and heritage you left me for Miriam! I love you daddy! I can't wait for the moment when I can sit next to you and Emily in the throne room of God and worship Him forever!

Love, Neicy
