Ruth Hunter King Obituary

Ruth Hunter King, Gridley business woman, passed away in her own home March 19, 2015, surrounded by family. She was 93.

Raised near Benton, Arkansas, King came to California during World War II and moved to Gridley after the war.

She was adamant in those early years in defending that women should be paid the same as men, and was proud to have been Gridley's first-ever woman real estate broker, starting King Real Estate & Insurance from her garage in 1958.

A deeply spiritual woman and a long-time member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, King actively but discretely sought ways to serve her "master broker" through the profession she loved, helping under served families buy their first homes and keep them.

She considered her clients friends, and many new arrivals to Gridley remembered Ruth King as the first person to greet them.

King is preceded in death by husband Earl E. King and is survived by son Robert King and daughter-in-law Mary King of Gridley; daughter Carole King and son-in-law Dennis Woodruff of Oakland; grandchildren Brett King of Madrid, Spain; Brian King and Aisha Djalo King of Gridley; Megan Woodruff and Jack Woodruff of Oakland; and great-grandchildren Gabriel King, Marley King, Devan Hill and Dylan Sharrock.

Services will be held Thursday, March 26 at 2 pm at the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. After interment, a reception will follow at the Moose Lodge.
