Obituary Condolences

Sabina Caroline Sala, age 76, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Western Slope Health Center in Placerville, CA. She had battled lung cancer triumphantly in 2013, but suffered several strokes over the past six months which ended her life.

Sabina "Sibby" Sala was born on July 4, 1938 in Charleroi, PA. She grew up in Donora, PA and was the oldest of three sisters. She graduated from Donora High School in 1956. She attended California State College in Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1960. She later went on to earn a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from California State University, Sacramento in 1978. She held four teaching credentials including Speech and Language Specialist.

Sabina married James Dale Mault in 1958, and they had their only child, James David Mault in 1959. Sabina and her family moved to Quincy, California. In 1962 Sabina worked for the Plumas Unified School District where she was a classroom teacher in Taylorsville, CA. She then went on to be the first Speech Pathologist for Plumas County in 1963 and served in that position until 1966. Sabina and her son moved to Sutter County in 1966 where she worked for the Sutter County Office of Education until she retired in 1998. Sabina worked at various schools throughout the county as a Speech and Language Therapist, but spent the most time at Bridge Street School in Yuba City where she developed many close friendships. She also worked in private practice as a Speech Pathologist during her time in Yuba City.

Sabina was never timid when it came to adventure. She experienced hang-gliding, motorcycle riding, glider flying, camping, fishing and white water rafting. She was active in theater, music, and was an avid and accomplished tennis player.

After retirement, Sabina moved to El Dorado County to be near her family. She played a very important role in her grandkids' lives. She attended all their sporting events and was their biggest cheerleader. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, quick wit and sarcasm. She was well loved by everyone who knew her. Even in her last months of life, she was able to make her nurses and aides laugh.

Sabina is survived by her son, Jim and his wife, Susan and her grandchildren, Jenna and William Mault of Pollock Pines, CA, her two sisters, Manilla (Joe) Hayes and Adeline Sala both from Pennsylvania, and three nieces, and great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

No services are planned at this time. Donations in Sabina's memory can be made to Marshall Foundation General Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 1996, Placerville, CA 95667 or at marshallmedical.org who supported her with transportation to and from her cancer treatments.
