Salvador Varela Soto Obituary

Professor Salvador V. Soto was born on November 18th, 1942 in Mexico, and joined our Lord on Tuesday, June 10th, 2014. He grew up in the California Central Valley and became a farmworker at a young age. After finishing high school, he earned two BA degrees at CSU Stanislaus and a teaching credential. Professor Soto completed his education with a MA in Social Science - Anthropology at Sacramento State. In 1971, he moved to Marysville and began his career at Yuba Community College. Professor Soto taught Cultural Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Mexican-American History, and Spanish. He mentored hundreds of students over 37 years through MEChA and various organizations. Within the community, Professor Soto was a social activist for voter's rights, education equality, immigration reform, and farmworkers' rights. He was involved with the United Farm Workers and marched along side Cesar Chavez. He worked on campaigns to help community members become naturalized citizens and get the vote out to make change. Overall, he believed in working for the betterment of others and being a lifelong learner.

Professor Soto took pride in his family. He has been married to Maria G. Soto for 40 years and had 5 daughters (Ixtlilxochitl G. Soto-Vargas, Quetzal L. Garcia, Iztaccihuatl G. Soto, Tonantzin E. Rodriguez, and Mixtlicoatl R. Gonzalez). He is survived by his wife, 5 daughters, and 13 grand children (Corina, Valeria, Enrique, Tzintzuni, Tonantzin, Citlallin, Huitziloxochitl, Anthony, Daniel, Citlali, Moyolehuani, Ixtaccihuatl, and Topiltzin).

Professor Salvador V. Soto's legacy will continue through the hearts and minds of his students, friends and family members.

Memorial service will take place at 1pm on Sunday, June 15th at Yuba College Auditorium (2088 N Beale Rd, Marysville, CA 95901).
