Shirley Rae Lewin Obituary

Shirley Rae Lewin, 95, transferred her home address from Yuba City, CA, to heaven on February 21, 2016. Shirley was born in Central City, SD on August 3, 1920 to John and Nevetta Hill.

She grew up in the Black Hills area in SD along with her three sisters. Shirley was married to James Lewin and together they had three children, Michael Hawthorne, Anthony Hawthorne, and Sheryl Lewin-Snelling.

Besides caring for her family, she loved an occasional fishing trip! Her professional career included being a files manager for a Midwest insurance company (before computers kids!). After she and Grandpa Jim Lewin retired, they spent a number of years managing Iron Creek campground in the Black Hills area. Shirley managed a general store, sold bait, and cooked chili and hamburgers for campers.

She was an avid reader. But, she did more than imagine traveling the world through her books. Shirley enjoyed a number of cruise ship adventures to Alaska, the Panama Canal, traveled to Israel, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. She had a full passport!

Shirley loved to bless family and others (including trash men and postal workers) with her freshly baked banana bread. She loved Bible studies with friends and was a regular supporter of Faith Christian School, especially the annual Jog-a-thon. Shirley attended Hope Point Nazarene Church of Yuba City, CA where the PT Cruisers ministry was frequently blessed by her walnut pies.

She is preceded in life by her husband James, her oldest son Michael, and her sisters Beverly Stearns and Janice Stratton. Shirley is survived by her son Tony, her daughter Sheryl (Cliff), and sister Phyllis Michaels.

Shirley enjoyed her children, her many grandchildren, and numerous great- grandchildren. Some called her "Grammie" and she had the privilege of being their nanny in their early years. Shirley left her loving imprint on all who knew her. Where you are going Grammie, save us a place! A private graveside service will be held in her honor in South Dakota. Any memorials may be directed to Faith Christian School, 3105 Colusa Ave. Yuba City, CA, 95993.
