Thomas Robert Gustie Obituary

Thomas Robert Gustie passed away on February 3rd, 2017 at the age of 77.

Tom was born in Waukegan, Illinois on August 10th, 1939 to Robert Gustie and Bernice (Behringer) Gustie. At the age of 4, his parents moved the family to San Pedro, California. Tom graduated Junipero Serra High School in Gardena in 1958, and joined the Society of Mary Catholic religious order directly after high school.

Tom attended college at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in history, in 1962. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in English at the University of Hawaii, and became a teaching brother thereafter.

He began teaching English, drama, and drafting at Saint Anthony High School on Maui. There he began directing plays, which he would continue to do throughout his teaching career.

Tom relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and taught at various Catholic high schools and middle schools, including Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. In 1984, Tom moved to Yuba City and began teaching English and drama at Yuba City High School. During this time, Tom became a proud father of Mike and Patrick, who both graduated from Yuba City High School in the 2000's.

After retiring from teaching in 1995, Tom worked many jobs including District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America in Sunnyside, Washington; Director of Religious Education at Notre Dame school in Marysville; employment specialist with Yuba County Health and Human Services; prison educator at California Medical Facility in Vacaville; and finally, language arts teacher at Yuba Community College until December of 2016.

Survivors include his sons, Mike and Patrick, his dear niece Teri Downey, his siblings Dianne (& Bob) Younkin and Paul (& Chrissie), his brother-in-law Dick Schreiber, as well as nine other nieces and nephews; Jan, Laurie, Jeff, Kristy, Shari, David, Michelle, Kevin, and Mary. He was preceded in death by his older sister Kathleen (Gustie) Schreiber as well as by both of his parents.

Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dobbins, CA on Friday, February 10th at 3:00 P.M.
