Thomy Gandy Obituary

Thomy Gandy was laid to rest on Friday September 23, 2016 at Sutter Memorial Cemetery in Sutter CA. Thomy was born November 1, 1938 in the town of Crawford Mississippi to Thomy Gandy Sr and Sadie (Henry) Gandy. Shortly following his birth, his parents moved to Kankakee, Illinois, a place Thomy would always call home. There he was baptized at the 2nd Baptist Church by pastor James M. Smith. Following the passing of his mother, Thomy was raised by his paternal grandmother, Leithie Gandy.

He graduated from Kankakee High School, Class of 1956, and enlisted in the Air Force where he spent the next 30 years traveling all over the world. He achieved the rank of Sr Master Sergeant and retired in 1986. He spent the next couple years doing work in Saudi Arabia and finally settling in Yuba City.

Thomy's passion for staying busy and being social brought him to a new career during his retirement. He went to work at the new Walmart in town and was quickly promoted to the Sporting Goods Department Manager in 1993 where he remained for the next 23 years. Thomy made good use of his time. He was an avid volunteer, participating in several non profit organizations to help better the community. He built strong relationships with the customers at Walmart that helped to build his Sporting Goods business and his work in the community. He knew many people in the community by their first name, he never forgot a face and always greeted everyone with an amazing smile that welcomed conversation. He laughed easy, encouraged lite hearted jokes and was a positive presence to be around. He considered everyone a friend and made those around him feel special.

Thomy had a great love for the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, the Chicago Bulls, cars, people and socializing. He frequented several local restaurants on a regular basis; Applebee's, Linda's and Big John's to name a few. He was known by first name and made an impression wherever he went.

He will be sadly missed by all, especially his family at Walmart. His daily delivery of laughter and jokes will leave a void in many of the hearts of the people he has worked with. He has made an impression in so many lives with his random acts of kindness, ability to make everyone feel welcome and his exceptional personality. Walmart will not be the same without him, especially the Sporting Goods Department. Thomy passed away unexpectedly a couple of days following his retirement from Walmart.

He leaves behind a daughter, Hayley who lives in England with her two daughters. He also leaves behind a large family in Illinois that he was raised with; siblings from his father's second marriage to Eunice (Craft) Gandy: Michael Gandy, Willie Mac Gandy, Jerry Gandy, Frances Gandy, and Nancy Gandy; cousins from his Aunt Mattie (Gandy) Thomas who helped raise Thomy: Andre Randle (deceased), Jack Randle, Gussie (Gandy) Fisher and her husband James Fisher, Carolyn Thomas, Rudolph Thomas Jr and Lelia Thomas. He also leaves two maternal aunts, Ollie Brown and Doris Henry of Flint, Michigan.

Thomy always wanted to give back to the community. Please remember him at Thanksgiving and adopt a family in need of a warm meal, as he did every year, and give in memory of Thomy Gandy-- a remarkable man, who will be missed and never forgotten.
