She was born May 31, 1932 in Oakland, CA to Gus and Demetra Athon. She moved to Marysville when she was 9 years old, when her mother married John D. Karnegis. The family moved to Yuba City and she attended Yuba City High School, she graduated in 1950.

In 1965, they moved to Placerville where they remained until 1968. Uraine and Hank traveled to many wonderful places, including Alaska, Florida, New York and Greece.
