Van T. Sweet Obituary

Van Torrence Sweet joined his beloved Carolyn, October 31, 2015, exactly two years after her passing, with family by his side.

Born in Stockton, California, on August 18, 1931 to Sanford and Pearl Sweet, he was raised across the street from the College of the Pacific (COP) where he attended college and met Carolyn Stevens. Two weeks after their graduation from COP in 1952, Van and Carolyn were married.

Van began his career in education teaching at Whittier Elementary School where he returned for five years following a short stint in the Army. Van moved the family to San Diego where he was the principal of Prospect Avenue School in Santee, CA. After eight years, the family moved to Maxwell where he was the superintendent of the Maxwell Unified School District. Following eight years in Maxwell, the family moved to Pescadero for two years then moved to Dos Palos where Van finished his educational career as the Superintendent of the Dos Palos Elementary School District.

Van continued his own personal education earning his master's degree from Cal State Los Angeles and later his Doctor of Education from USC. Van was a member of several YMCA clubs in southern California and had the honor of serving as club president and district governor for that organization. Van continued his civic career with membership in the Rotary Club. He also was honored to serve various offices in each club he was a member and was District Governor for District 5220. Rotary provided several opportunities to see the country and the world participating in international conventions and volunteering in mission and outreach work.

Van and Carolyn loved to travel and cruise. They completed over 85 cruises and traveled all over the USA and most of the world. Van loved to sing and participate in community theater groups. Van was a lifelong Methodist and most recently active in the Dos Palos Methodist Church.

Van was preceded in death by his wife of 61 plus years Carolyn and his brother Sanford Sweet. Van is survived by his four children: Steve Sweet (Kathy) of Frederic, MD, Cindy Sweet Lovelace (Bill) of Maxwell, CA, Chuck Sweet (Dawn) of Dos Palos, CA, and Sue Sweet Johnson (Ron) of Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren: Chris Sweet (Heidi), Nick and Danny Sweet; Jenifer and Krista Lovelace; Emily Sweet Ashton (Seth); and Ronda Johnson Nelson (Dustin) and Crystal Johnson; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maxwell United Methodist Church or the Rotary Club. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. January 23, 2016, Dos Palos United Methodist Church, Dos Palos, CA.
