Velia Martha (Rivera) Sidhu Obituary

Velia Martha (Rivera) Sidhu, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed peacefully on Saturday, October 31, 2015. Born in El Paso, TX on February 2, 1924, her childhood was spent with her family in the Sierra Nevada community of Westwood, CA and relocated to Marysville in 1941 where she graduated from Marysville High School.

Velia moved to Yuba City after WWII where she met Frank Sidhu. They were married in 1949 and had two sons and a daughter. Surrounded by their peach and prune orchards, Velia maintained her bustling home as well as shuttling children to and from after school activities at Holy Angels School. She was a member of the Mothers' Guild and an active parishioner at St. Isidore's Catholic Church.

Employed by Sunsweet, she retired in 1985 to focus on her greatest joy, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Velia was an active member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1089 in Yuba City for 31 years, where she could be found most weekends dancing and laughing with her dear friends Lucy and Sahar Khan. Velia was best known for her contagious laughter and vivid story-telling, as well as melt-in-your-mouth tortillas and delicious chicken tacos. Her home was always open to her family and friends where many happy hours were spent by those who were dear to her heart.

She considered the maintaining of her home and property north of Yuba City for 70 years from 1946 to 2015 to be her greatest achievement along with nurturing her family.

She is survived by son, Daniel (Patti); daughter, Kathleen Silva (Jay); grandchildren, Sharon Toche (Sylvestre); Rachelle Sidhu; Nicholas Silva; Emmy Gamble Sidhu; great-grandchildren, Isabella and Raiden Toche; sisters, Estella Bustamente and Liz Post (Randy); and Velia's dear friend Lucy (Sahar) Khan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; son, Michael; and grandson, Joseph Silva, Jr. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Velia will forever be loved and greatly missed by all. Thank you to the staff at Yuba Skilled Nursing Center in Yuba City and Sutter North Hospice.

A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Yuba City Moose Lodge, 205 S. Walton Avenue, Yuba City. A burial service will be private at Sutter Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel.
