Viva Rae Sheppard Obituary

(Vi) Sheppard was born to Jesse Danley Stearns in Lassen county on March 9, 1921 and passed away peacefully at Prestige Assisted Living in Chico, California on Sunday November 10, 2013.

She grew up in Maxwell, California and graduated from Maxwell high school at the age of sixteen. She married Frank Lyle Sheppard in 1943. They lived in Mokelumne Hill for two years before moving to Biggs, California to start a dairy farm in 1945. In 1964 they sold the dairy operation and began farming rice on their property at the end of Drake Avenue. Frank passed away in 1991, they had celebrated almost 49 years of marriage.

Vi was a bookkeeper for Shifflett Bros Trucking for fourteen years and worked at the ASCS/Department of Agriculture in Oroville for over twenty years. With her dedication and hard work she became a trusted friend to many Butte County farmers.

Known as Grandma Vi to many of the youth in the community, she volunteered in the reading program at Gridley Wilson Elementary School for nine years and served as a board member on the Biggs Unified School District for seven years. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren's many sporting events, rooting for her beloved San Francisco Giants and traveling with family and friends in their trailer across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

She is survived by her four children: Frank Jr (Wilma), Florence (Howard) Hamman, John (Chuddy), and Charles (Rhonda); twelve grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers, William and Richard; and sister, Mary.

Vi was always a happy, positive person and an inspiration to many.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday November 15, 2013 at the Gridley-Biggs cemetery gazebo at 3 p.m.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Prestige Assisted living for their loving care to Vi the past three years. Donations may be made to Biggs Richvale Little League at the Butte Federal Credit Union in Biggs to support youth baseball/softball programs which she dearly loved.
