William Ray Stombaugh Obituary

April 27, 1929 - January 12, 2015

William Ray Stombaugh went to be with his Lord January 12, 2015 in Yachats, Oregon, with his family at his side. He was born April 27, 1929 in Joplin, Missouri to his parents Grover and Retta Stombaugh, the youngest of 5 children.

Ray joined the Army with his good friend Noel Bailey at the young age of 17 to fight in World War II, lying about his age to get accepted. He served in the Pacific Theater.

Ray lived in Modesto, CA area for 47 years where he met his wife of 52 years, Esta Lee. He worked as a glazier for his entire working life, owning Ray's Glass in Oakdale, CA for many years. He was a Gold Member of the Glazier's Local Union in Sacramento.

Ray enjoyed fishing so much he retired to Yuba City, CA to be closer to his favorite river where he spent many hours trying to catch the biggest one and telling stories to all he met.

Ray was a very outgoing man and loved people. He was free- spirited and maintained a youthful outlook his entire life. He always had a good story to tell. His heart was so big and full of love that no matter where he went he was always greeted with warm smiles from everyone who came in contact with him.

He was an active member of the Yuba City Moose Lodge 1204 where he met the last love of his life, Betty Benner. They were married in Betty's backyard in 2001. Ray and Betty lived a full life traveling, gambling and dancing and were always seen together at the Moose Lodge enjoying life.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife Esta Lee; his son Douglas Ray Stombaugh and brothers Albert and John Stombaugh.

He is survived by his current wife Betty Benner of Yuba City; daughter Rhonda Walker of Yachats, OR; sister Catherine Bolton of Camp Verde, AZ and brother Rufus "Red" Stombaugh of South Jordan, UT, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Noon on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Yuba City Moose Lodge, 205 S. Walton Avenue, Yuba City, CA.
