Winona Irene (Burrows) Stokes Obituary

Winona Irene (Burrows) Stokes passed away February 2, 2015 at Valley West Care Center in Williams, CA, after over 103 blessed years. During her last 3 years she lived at Valley West, where she was given the best of care by the staff of wonderful, caring people.

She was born May 22, 1911 in Stonyford, CA, then shortly moved to Sites, CA where her father owned the store. They moved to Williams where Winona attended 8th grade through high school. She met William Charles (Bill) Stokes, Jr. Of Colusa, married him at age 20 and they moved to Colusa, thus residing in Colusa County all of her 103 years.

Winona's family tree comes from a long line of early California settlers. Her father was Leo LeRoy Burrows, her mother was Alice (Roden) Burrows and her brother was Orley Onlo Burrows, who was married to Dena A. (Kalfsbeek) Burrows. Her grandfather was Orlando Arthur Burrows and her grandmother was Mary Ann (Molly) (Squires) Burrows. Orlando was born in Oregon, then as a baby was moved to California with his father Rufus Gustavus Adolphus Britian Patrick Oneal Burrows, known as R.G. Burrows, and his mother was Charlotte Therenah (Hull) Burrows. R.G's father was Arthur Burrows, born in 1797 . R.G. was born in LaPorte, Indiana, then came to California as a teenager with his father and stepmother by wagon train. They came through the Sierras after the Donner Party had been there the winter before. R.G. helped to bury some of the bones still found there. They arrived at Sutter's Fort on September 10, 1848. R.G. And family lived near Chrome, CA and he and many of his descendants can be found in the cemetery there.

Winona and Bill enjoyed a long life in Colusa. She loved taking care of her children, enjoying her grandchildren and taking care of her home and yard. She was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star, International Rainbow for Girls, former Girl Scouts leader and was a member of the Colusa First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), always helping as needed. After Bill retired from owning his Allis Chalmers business in Colusa, they were able to spend more time out in their camper and bringing home lots of rocks! Winona was able to enjoy her rocks and her home up to the age of 100! Bill passed away in 1987, but Winona continued to do all the things she loved doing.

Winona is survived by her daughters Winona Deane (Stokes) Laughrun (husband Dr. James Laughrun) of Claremont, CA, Mary Ann (Stokes) Nation (husband Robert Allen Nation) of Colusa, CA and son Robert Lee (wife Donna Woods) Stokes of Colusa, CA. Grandchildren: Christina Ann (Laughrun) Sayers (husband Phillip Sayers), Dr. Diane Marie Laughrun, Carol Lynn (Laughrun) Tews (husband Daryl Tews), Dr. David Robert Laughrun (wife Linda (Directo) Laughrun), Robert Michael Stokes, Robert Shawn Nation, Shanna Marie (Nation) Jose, Thomas Andrew Nation (wife Heather (Friel) Nation).
