Alma Caroline "Peggy" Day
Passed away peacefully on Monday, March 19, 2012 in Sebastopol, California at the age of 91.

Peggy was born September 25, 1920 in Orange, New Mexico. The family ultimately settled in Rio Oso, CA, where she attended Browns Elementary School and graduated from East Nicholas High School. She married soon after and gave birth to her daughter Linda. During World War II she worked in the Richmond shipyards as electrician, boilermaker and welder.

The marriage ended in divorce and she worked as a waitress â€" an occupation she loved â€" until bone cancer resulted in the amputation of a leg at age 49.

She married Alvin G. Day in 1972 and moved to Trinity County where she began a second career of service to others. She was active in Pink Ladies, Blood Bank, Tall Pines Garden Club, many other local service organizations and the Democratic Party.

She was also active in St. Phillips Mission, Episcopal Church Women and served on the Diocesan Council. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. In recognition of her community service, she was named Trinity County Citizen of the Year in 1987.

Peggy moved to Santa Rosa in 1997, became a member of Church of the Incarnation and was for several years a familiar presence at The Living Room, a daytime center for homeless women and children.

She will be remembered for her devotion to family and church, and her determination not to allow her disability to get in the way of an active life helping others. Despite advancing dementia, she retained to the end her wit, her optimism and her smile.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin, parents Julia and Oscar Able, siblings Albert and Lee Able and Margaret Ethel Young. She is survived by her brother Mark Able, her daughter Linda (Robert) Judd, granddaughters Caroline (Mark) Bauhaus, Christin (Rhodney) Moore, Lisa (Stanton) Ireland and seven great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Sierra View Cemetery in Olivehurst, CA. A celebration of Peggy's life will be held May 12, 2012 in Marysville, CA. For information, call 707-953-8617.
