On Tuesday, April 24th, 2012, Lorraine Cowell Beech passed away with her family around her in Yuba City, California at the age of 89. Lorraine and her husband of 47 years, Crowell Havens Beech resided in Belvedere, California from 1970 until his passing in 2008, and her move to Yuba City in 2010.
Lorraine was born in Eldora, Iowa on April 4, 1923 to John Henry and Alice Quigley Cowell, both of Eldora, Iowa. Her father passed away when she was seven, and she and her brother Robert helped their mother Alice through the depression years. She attended local schools and remembered many great friends and summers at the lake. She graduated from Eldora High School 1940. Shortly after high school she moved out to Southern California where there were more opportunities. She took a job working in the office of an oral surgeon. She also got involved in community theater, and it was there that she met her beloved husband, Crowell. The couple owned and operated two busy car washes in the Newport Beach area before moving north to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they enjoyed even greater success as entrepreneurs. Lorraine supported Crowell in his many endeavors. She also excelled at needlepoint and created many works of art to adorn their home. Together they enjoyed old movies, politics, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Though Lorraine did not have children of her own, she was well loved and survived by her two step-daughters, Tracy Leighton and husband Lloyd of Yuba City, Allison Zuehlsdorff and husband Scott of Mission Viejo, her nephews Richard Cowell and wife Sue of Oxford, Iowa, Bob Cowell and wife Linda of Arlington, Tennessee, her niece Barbara Redling, grandchildren Lacey and Cozette Zuehlsdorff, Peter Leighton and Elizabeth Mallen and husband Tim, great-grandson James Mallen, and many great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Crowell Havens Beech and brother Robert Eugene Cowell.
She will be keenly missed by all who knew and loved her.
