Ann was born in Sacramento, California on March 24, 1937 to Charles & Caroline Mathews and was the first of their five children. She passed away March 6th 2013 surrounded by her children and many close family members.
Ann grew up in Marysville, attending Notre Dame Catholic School through the 12th grade. After graduating, Ann went to college at Stanford University where she obtained both a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Degree in Education.
Ann's career as an educator spanned over 30 years, most of which were spent as a kindergarten teacher and developmental specialist for Marysville Joint Unified School District. The positive impact of her dedication and service affected the lives of hundreds of children in this community.
Ann was energetic and loved to socialize. There wasn't a song she couldn't dance to or sing along with if the mood struck her right. She snow skied in the winter and swam in the summer. She also loved the theater, going to concerts and attending Music Circus shows. An avid life-long reader, Ann loved to spend weeks at a time secluded with a stack of books at her cabin in Tahoe or enjoying cool foggy mornings during summer stays at the beach in Aptos.
Very active in social and political causes throughout her life, Ann was a member of Riding Club, the Delta Chapter of Alpha Sigma, and was also for many years a member of the Republican Central Committee. She was an active participant in supporting local causes and campaigns.
Ann was a very dedicated friend and had many close friends to whom she was fiercely loyal and supportive. However, her most cherished role was that of "Mom" or "Gannie" to her children, grandchildren and great grandchild whom she loved dearly. Always willing to travel and watch a sporting event in which they were participating, or by helping out with afterschool care, she was never happier than when she was able to get down on the floor and finger- paint, build a fort, or play Lego's with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Joseph Mathews, her mother, Caroline Ann Sullivan Mathews, and daughter, Caroline Ann Riddle.
Ann is survived by her siblings; Charlie (Shelia) Mathews, Edward (Mimi) Mathews, Fred Mathews, Mary (David) Taormino, her two children; Harry (Janelle) Hendrix, Jr. and Marikathryn (Todd) Hendrix, her four grandchildren; Jocelyn, Carley, Andrew and Zeke, great grandson, Ayden. She is also survived by close family members Kit and Bob Islip, Debbie Mathews and The Prindiville, Sullivan, Mathews Families, as well as her more than 20 nieces and nephews, all of whom were her favorites.
