Aloysius J. Cerny
Aloysius J. Cerny, died on April 18, 2013 at the Norfolk Veterans Home, Norfolk, NE, two weeks short of his 97th birthday. The son of John and Justina Cerny, he was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 1,1916. He graduated from East Technical High School in 1935.
Mr. Cerny married Florence Bumblis in 1940. Children born to them were Roy, Paul, Kathleen, and Alice. Florence died on September 23,1953 in Sheldon, Iowa, soon after the birth of their fourth child. Mr. Cerny married Dorothy Olson in 1957.
He served his country in the Army from August 1940 through January 1946, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Mr. Cerny earned his B.A. from South Dakota State University, attending there from 1946 to 1949. A Masters degree was earned at Drake University in 1953.
Mr. Cerny taught art in Sheldon, Iowa from 1949 to 1955.
He then became the Supervisor of Art Education in the Sioux Falls Public School system, from 1955 through 1977.
In his retirement he taught art at the Sioux Falls Senior Center. Mr. Cerny volunteered as a tax preparer and trained others to do taxes for HARP, working faithfully in this capacity for twenty years. He was honored with the Jefferson Award for his service to the community in 1985.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, (who also resides at the Norfolk Veterans Home - 600 E. Benjamin, Norfolk NE 68701) his four children, and many new generations of children he cherished.
