Bert Neiber, age 96, died at Brookview Neighborhood in Brookings on December 16, 2013.
He was born on February 17, 1917 at Watertown, SD to Bert and Dolly (Dewey) Neiber. He married Ruth Hoover at Onida, SD on February 1, 1942. She preceded him in death in 2007.
He is survived by two daughters - Nancy Neiber of Brookings and Mary Larscheid (Steve) Christensen of Spearfish, SD. Three grandchildren - Slade (Stephanie), Shane (Stephanie) and Summer Larscheid and four great grandchildren - Kaya, Cade, Cole and Mark.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother - Dale and son in law - Mark Larscheid.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 20, 2013 at United Church of Christ in Pierre. Burial with military honors will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Pierre.
He grew up in Pierre graduating from Riggs High School in Pierre. He served in the US Army in Europe during WW II where he participated in the Ardennes and Rhineland Campaigns and was awarded two bronze stars
. He retired a Captain and went on to serve in the SD National Guard.
After the service he returned to Pierre where he opened Bert's Shoes and Pierre Bootery which he owned and operated for 35 years. He also worked as a loan officer for the First National Bank in Pierre into his 80's.
He served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank and as President of the Pierre School Board. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW
. He was an active member of the UCC Church Choir and a volunteer for Pierre Cowboy's Basin League Baseball and avid supporter of Women's Fastpitch Softball.
He moved to Brookings in 1999 where he was a avid supporter of SDSU Athletics especially Women's Basketball. He enjoyed fishing, model railroads and spending time with his family was the joy of his life.
There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Thursday at Rude Funeral Home in Brookings.
