Dee was born on November 13, 1933 to Fred and Freda Dawley and grew up on what is currently the Dawley Farm Village. Dee graduated from Linwood grade school on Sycamore Drive in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1951. In 1955 she attended nursing class at Sioux Valley Hospital. She earned a bachelors of science in nursing with high honors. She graduated in 1956 from South Dakota State University with a B.S. in nursing education. She was an Instructor of Nursing with SDSU for 7 years. In 1965 Dee went to the University of Michigan
School of Anesthesia. Dee was awarded her Certificate in Anesthesia on June 18, 1965 from the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Anesthesia and became a board certified CRNA in October of 1965. She worked at 2 hospitals in Michigan as a CRNA from 1965-1998. In 1999, Dee returned to Sioux Falls.
Dee was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges (1955-1956), and the Sylvan Circle Certificate of Membership at South Dakota State University. Dee was presented with the Campanile Society Membership from the SDSU Foundation in recognition of special generosity in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. She was also awarded the President's Call to Service Medal in 2007.
Dee remained active throughout her life. She went to the Avera Fitness Center every morning from 8:00am-11:30am and from there went to Avera McKennan Hospital from 12:30pm-4:00pm to volunteer in 5 different departments. Dee spent over 12,000 hours volunteering over an 11 year period.
Dee loved to travel and visited all of the states in the United States, including Hawaii and an Alaskan cruise. Several times she spent 2 weeks with her father in Florida in January. She also attended the Montreal World's Fair with her father and attended the Seattle World's Fair. Dee traveled in all of the provinces of Canada, Mexico, a Caribbean cruise, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and Bermuda. She also traveled abroad in Russia, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, a Kenyan Safari, Morocco, China, Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Austria, McCain, Azure Gibraltar, Hungary and the Canary Islands. She spent Christmas Eves with her good friend, Dorothy McEachan, and her family. She lived in the same beautiful Biddle House condo in Wyandotte, Michigan. Delores always worked all the holidays so her local CRNA fellow workers could be with their families. The Biddle House condo was on the Detroit River and her 9th floor condo gave her a beautiful view of the Detroit River and the many freighters that traveled through Detroit.
Delores presently lived in the Yankton Trail condo that was beautifully furnished by Ethan Allen. It was only one of the three condos available in 1999 when she moved to Sioux Falls to retire with her family who lived on farms in Brandon and Valley Springs and in Sioux Falls. Dee loved life and always enjoyed being busy working, exercising, volunteering and traveling. It was the work ethic she learned from growing up on the farm. Dee also belonged to the Westward Ho Country Club where she always had after Sunday church brunch with her family.
Grateful for having shared her life, Dee is survived by two brothers, F. William (Donna) Dawley of Brandon, SD, Joel (Vicki) Dawley of Sioux Falls and a sister, Carol; and nine nieces and nephews, Todd (Linda) Dawley of Valley Springs, SD, Troy Dawley of Valley Springs, SD, Thad Dawley of New Haven, CT, Trevor (Barbara) Dawley of Valley Springs, SD, Trent Dawley of Garretson, SD, Michelle (Jakob) Dawley-Harrison of Snohomish, WA, Michael Dawley of Sioux Falls, SD, and Diana Dawley of Britton, SD.
